Artist and Historical Figure Tom Thomson comes to life via canoeing, story telling and art creation for four days this summer in Algonquin Park to the delight and inspiration of retreat guests at Northern Edge Algonquin . . .
Algonquin Park, ON – Tom Thomson (1877-1917), one of Canada’s most
important and influential artists created a distinct approach to portraying rugged Canadian landscapes, particularly in Algonquin Park. Thomson’s images are characterized by intense colour, bold brush strokes, and evocative moods. This August 9-12 art lovers gather at Northern Edge Algonquin for an annual art retreat that has been offered in association with the Art Gallery of Ontario and the National Art Gallery.
This art retreat celebrates Thomson and the creative spirit with storytelling, paddling adventures and art instruction. “Guests will hear about the unique meeting between Tom Thomson and conservationist Grey Owl and enjoy fresh-baked doughnuts just as the two did here in 1916. They’ll also learn how Thomson originals were unwittingly destroyed on Kawawaymog Lake,” says Todd Lucier, co-founder of Northern Edge Algonquin, “and how could any Thomson admirer, not wade into discussion of the mysterious
circumstances surrounding Thomson’s death in 1917?”
Jill Boschulte, an artist / facilitator of the retreat is well-acquainted with the lore of Thomson. “I help guests capture their personal perspectives of the landscape, working like Thomson, with a great deal of spontaneity capturing the magic of the moment and connecting with the landscape.” Later, guests are invited to expand and develop their impressions upon returning to the Retreat Centre. “There is an artist inside each of us, and I help that artist come out to play.” “Everyone has a creative spark, and if given the right fuel and encouragement, a fire will ignite.”
What is required to participate? An adventurous spirit, a creative spark and a sense of curiousity. No special skills are necessary and we provide the equipment and art material! Packages include retreat materials and instruction, 4 days/3 nights accommodation at our solar-powered eco-retreat centre and all meals, made from locally-grown and organic food.
