Finnish sauna: Stories about folk healing, modern wellbeing and cultural heritage

A rare treat is coming to Northern Edge Algonquin very soon: a sauna and folklore workshop with traditional knowledge keeper, Dalva Lamminmäki. Dalva is a Finland-based folklorist currently on a Sauna Tour in Canada. We are excited to share that when she visits Northern Edge on June 4, she will lead a presentation followed by a sauna in the Finnish tradition. Spots are limited. We invite you to attend the presentation, sauna, and meal afterward, or just join us for the presentation.

About the Workshop

Finnish sauna- Stories about folk healing, modern wellbeing and cultural heritage

Dalva will share about Finnish folk healing and sauna culture. Currently conducting her doctoral research as a grant researcher at the University of Eastern Finland, she studies Finland’s sauna culture and healing traditions while also lecturing in folklore studies. The sauna was not just a place for washing, birth, and death but also a space for folk magic. The sauna as a building and place has a long history, it is a traditional log building, but also a spiritual space and the core of Finnish wellness. Dalva will discuss how old traditions continue today, blending ancient knowledge with modern approaches.

According to Dalva’s research, all the elements of a sauna have a deeper meaning. Old rituals of sauna culture like whisking are still practiced, now with a modern touch. Traditional knowledge still guides these activities, such as how we choose specific tree types for whisking and how we focus our mental state when we go to the sauna.

Following the presentation, we will prepare to enter our wood-fired sauna in the Finnish tradition, with options to try cold immersion in our fresh water lake. This will be the only talk on Dalva’s tour that includes an actual sauna experience! After the sauna, we’ll have a simple soup and salad with some fresh fruit selections available to replenish electrolytes.
