The Blueberry Tree

According to Chinese Medicine we have entered the season of late summer/early autumn, related to the Earth element and the spleen which helps us with digestion.  The actual season began on September 7th~Labour Day as our gardens reached their peak performance, chalk full of abundance and colour.  It is time to harvest the bounty from all we have planted in the garden of our lives, nourishing ourselves for the long winter ahead.

A few weeks ago my husband and I went blueberry picking with our daughter and 4 year old grand-daughter.  It was a beautiful late summer day, and the field was full of blueberries!  I remembered the first time I went blueberry picking with my mom when I was 4.  We made the most delicious blueberry pie afterwards, and it was one of the most memorable moments in my childhood.  As I recalled my first blueberry picking experience, I remembered a dream I had years ago about picking blueberries with my mom.  At the time, I sensed the dream was about preparing myself and my mother for her transition into the spirit world.

As I reflected on the dream, I wondered if the dream resurfaced again at just the right moment, as my youngest grand-daughter was picking blueberries for the first time at the very same age I was when I was in the blueberry patch with my mother.  I sense this dream and story are about generational healing from mother to daughter.

Martha’s Dream – Hawaii, 2012

I am in a blueberry patch, picking blueberries with Mom.  I notice a trail to another patch.  It is full of blueberries.  I call out to mom, ‘Mom you have to see this blueberry patch!  There are enough Double Blueberry Bushes for everyone’!

Next to the dream in my journal was a story I wrote connected to the dream.  We never know when a story or dream will be important to share.  I created a small book with the story and dream, painted with blueberry dye from the blueberries we had picked.  I read the story to my family on Labour Day, to celebrate the harvest and nourishment we had all received from our gardens and ancestors.  Afterwards, together we feasted on the most delicious blueberry pie!

Blueberry Tree Story

Once a little girl who loved blueberries wished to have a ‘Blueberry Tree’ of her very own.  Now, normally blueberries grow on small bushes close to the earth, however in the dreamworld anything is possible.  Imagine how many blueberries a tree would produce!

With great delight, innocence and belief in magic the little girl planted a blueberry.   The blueberry seeds grew into the most magnificent tree, where she lived and played.  It housed and fed her and kept her warm and safe.  The birds brought her on adventures to the sky world above.  She accompanied the animals to meadows, forests and landscapes where they lived and hunted.  The small creatures took her beneath the surface to explore the underworlds.

One day the little girl yearned to see the ocean.  Just then a magical woman dressed in turquoise, coral and blue danced towards her on a spiral path.  She wore gold slippers and held her hand out to the little girl, inviting her to dance with her.  They danced all the way to the ocean.

When their feet touched the water, they turned into mermaids.  The little girl was so enthralled to observe all the sea creatures, and explore the depths of the ocean.  She discovered many treasures that had been awaiting her.

She forgot all about the blueberry tree, until one day she noticed a blue berry floating in the ocean and ate it.  She was reminded of the blueberry tree and yearned to return to the tree again, as a Sea Dancer.  She danced the spiral pathway back to the tree, and when she arrived there was a young child sitting under the tree, yearning to explore the ocean.

Even when we leave our dream to explore another, there is always a part of us, the original dreamer, who remains, even though we may have forgotten.
